For decades people have been mistakenly using the terms „Modern“ and „Contemporary“ Art interchangeably. In fact, there is a big difference between these two arts. Modern art represents a period in history from the 1860s until the 1960s. Some of the most popular artists in history, such as Picasso or van Gogh created their art in this era. The name of Modern art implies that it did not build on traditions and styles that came before it. Contemporary art started its life in the 1960s with the emergence of conceptual and performance art. The key difference from modern art is that in contemporary art the process of creation of an artwork is as important as the artwork itself.
