On Tuesday, December 22, in the period from 12:00 to 17:00, in X Vitamin gallery the exhibition of Nikola Markovic “Seventh Circle” will be opened and in this way will be marked the third anniversary of the founding of the gallery.
Markovic continues to develop the idea of painting, which he began with the exhibition “Scene” in the Salon of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade last year, where he reveals a unique view of the work of one of the greatest painters of all time – Giotto di Bondone, and his masterpiece – frescoes in Padua, endowment of Enrico Scrovegni . Enrico wanted to wash the stain off the family name, and to “clense” the property that his father, Reginaldo Scrovegni , had acquired in a dishonest way. Dante Alighieri placed old Scrovegni in the seventh circle of hell even after the construction of the chapel – thus the exhibition got its name.
Although the original frescoes feature scenes of salvation with an emphasis on the Virgin Mary, Markovic’s paintings are negative of them in every sense. As a basis for his work, he uses reproductions of originals printed in almost natural size, in black and white, which contradict the bright color of frescoes in Padua, while psychedelic narrative re-examines the relationship between human and superhuman, fear and freedom, sin and salvation, artists and art.
The exhibition is available as a free virtual guided tour which you can visit by clicking on the player on the top of this page.
